I am not sure if you all notice about the big 'hoo haa' with HTC products, that HTC did not release the video driver for their chipset.

I think it happens to our case as well. When I am playing TCPMP player, I am unable to tune the video settings and it played frame by frame!

My gf's Samsung i780 using xscale processor, play smoothly !!

I install TCPMP 0.71 and using same storage card and playing the same file.

Anyone have the same issue?

The reason why I'm buying this phone is that I suppose it will have proper driver for the graphics part (thus giving us good performance). Hope someone from I-mate will respond to this matter soon and tell us what the problem is and if they can(will) fix it.

How is the performance of this device in other than video playing parts? - Larger data-files(audio, games)?

Thanks for answer

I think you'll find that its probably the TCPMP software that doesnt support the video chipset. As WMP on the 9502 plays video quite nicely, as Imate have included support for the video chipset. TCPMP is longer supported by the CoreCodec group and all future releases which will include support for the 9502 video chipset (which is coming) will be in the Coreplayer Mobile.

Sounds great...but wait: do you have ANY proof for this claim? I can't find anything on the internet, on the contrary, it seems that the 9502 has the same crappy hardware video driver support like the HTC TyTN II. Have you played a 800(!) MB video file from the 9502 or TyTN II? Horrible quality. Do the same with the Samsung i780 and Marvell PXA chipset and you'll have a huge surprise.

The 9502 clearly does not utilize the graphics capabilities of the qualcomm processor.  I can't get my 9502 to play VGA (640x480) video at all, even really low bitrate videos.

The best result I can get is using Coreplayer, and setting video preferences to RawFramebuffer.  This way it can play qvga video at 23fps, about 500kbps.  It doesn't look great though.  We NEED graphics drivers to be made for the 9502's qualcomm processor.  It'd make a huge difference when playing movies and games, switching from portrait to landscape and opening Tomtom maps etc.

I feel a little ripped off by i-Mate TBH.  The 9502 is sold as an MSM7200 device, but doesn't use the MSM7200's video capabilities. It's like being sold a dual core PC, getting it home and finding that only one of the processors works.  Unacceptable.

I have just posted a reply much the same as this one on the SDHC thread. This product was sent to market too fast! With that in mind i-Mate should be mindful to keep it's customer base informed and appraised with firmware, driver and rom update targets. So far there seems to be precious little in this regard!

I completely agree.  I know the SDHC drivers are coming - a few people, myself included have spoken to people at i-mate about them, but judging from recent news items, I can't see I-mate having the time or money to invest in making video drivers.

At least if we had confirmation on the website of what they are developing, with target dates it'd put my mind at ease.  To be fair, the 9502 works great for a first ROM, but without direct, publicised confirmation that these 2 important updates are coming I can't say I'd recommend it to anyone.  This seems to be the genuine concensus on the internet from what I have read so far.

It's a shame because the device is perfect otherwise, if they just got their arses in gear with the software - especially after 5 months of delays.

Considering that Microsoft have given the notification for this device to receive WM6.1, I wonder if imate are holding off on the Video drivers / SDHC drivers for the 6.1 ROM. Either way the 9502 is an awesome device, and to have an OS to support its capabilities, would be great..

Someone on another forum asked i-mate support about this, and was told that there are no plans to release a WM6.1 ROM for the 9502.  Even if they do, I don't see that it'd be any more likely to contain the video drivers.

This is absolute madness!  I can't play VGA video on my £400 VGA device!  Kinda defeats the object of having TV out for me :/

So, do you all think that we will be facing the same problems, that HTC users do?

Yes.  I can't see this getting resolved.

It really is false advertising.  This was advertised as having a Qualcomm MSM7200 processor.  These processors are brilliant with graphics/video, yet I-mate clearly haven't bothered to make drivers so it ends up performing worse than most pocket PCs from 3 years ago.

It's like advertising something as having a touchscreen, getting it home and finding that yes, it does have a touchscreen, but that there's no drivers for the touch part so it can only be used like a normal screen.  If it's going to be advertised as having a MSM7200 processor then it should actually use its features!

Only people that have the device can ask online support, so can someone, that already has it, ask I-mate if they are going to do something about this and then post the reply here? Thanks

I tried asking, but the Europe Support never has anyone there.  I've never managed to get through to the American support and the Australasian support guy closed the conversation when I asked him about the issue.

I wrote an e-mail on their EU e-mail support ( eusupport@imate.com ) few days ago, but no answer yet..., maybe anyone else will have more luck. It seems they are not visiting their forums - bad :-(

hmm I have just spoken to Imate Tech support (twice)and both times they CONFIRMED 100% that the 9502 use NVIDIA graphic chipset, I did this as my 9502 wont play Telstra Foxtel for mobile files correctly.
Very jerky, and sound ahead of motion..spoke to telstra and they said it was my device

I think it has the NVIDIA chipset, but it doesn't appear to use it.  We sure as hell paid for it :P

Apparently, in devices that use it correctly it is VERY obvious as they can play back pretty much DVD quality video at 30fps.  The 9502 performance is more like the HTC Tytn II, which has the chip, but not the drivers and can't even manage low quality video at 15fps.

even though i have own a ton of mobile devices, i can't speak geek.  all i can say is that in the past year i have had 3 or more mobile 6 devices and all of them were awful at playing any video and games were worse.  i don't play fast graphics type of games.  i am more of a bejeweled type of 'gamer.'  there is this one game called fruitakia that plays great on my palm lifedrive, bought it and played it when i had the motorola mpx300 [ mobile 2003 ] and then i bought the dopod.  It is like a slot machine sort of .. any way - it moved so slow - as did some other games, that i thought the dopod was defective.  same problem with games on my HP and now on my HTC shift.  I think most of the problem is microsofts doing.

Someone over at XDA-Developers reported that he spoke to 2 I-Mate technicians and that they confirmed that video driver fixes will be made available within a month!  :D  I hope this is true!

Hi,

do you have some link to the thread on XDA dev pls?
Looks like rumors to me - ultimate_guy wrote, that they told him it has NVIDIA GPU, but why didnt they mention it in device specifications?( it is an advantage )
In addition MSM 7200 has ATI GPU - what is the reason to have 2 GPUs onboard ( and both functionless as it seems ) - looks to me little bit non economic.

We have to wait and hope, that sometimes in the future, we will get ROM or patch, that will make this the real ULTIMATE device...
Or can we do anything else?

Although I think the guy who posted it is ultimate_guy from up there :P

I really don't think the 9502 has a NVidia chip, but fingers crossed the drivers are on the way.  It looks like Imate's had a stab at making them but they just don't work so well.  Maybe if I keep kicking up a ****storm on every pocketpc forum I can find it'll help :P
